There’s something special about starting a growing journey in spring. As the days get lighter and the soil begins to warm, it’s the perfect time to learn new skills, get your hands in the earth and grow something from the very beginning.
This March, Brighter Futures is welcoming new growers to our seasonal growing course, designed to gently guide you through the full growing year, from planning and planting, right through to harvesting, cooking and closing down for winter.
Whether you’re completely new to growing or looking to build confidence and knowledge, this course is about learning together, connecting with nature and enjoying the process.
What You’ll Learn Throughout the Year
March – Getting Started
We begin with the foundations. You’ll learn how to choose the right crops, understand crop rotation and start your own seedlings, including flowers. We’ll also explore why organic growing matters and cover the basics of composting, setting you up for a healthy, sustainable plot.
April – Caring for What You’ve Grown
As seedlings begin to grow, we’ll focus on nurturing them, knowing when they’re ready to be planted out and how to do it safely. We’ll also have open discussions around keeping hens, looking at the pros and cons for those curious about small-scale poultry.
May – Growing With Confidence
This month is all about planting out and keeping your garden healthy. You’ll learn organic pest control methods, best watering practices and be introduced to beekeeping, understanding the vital role pollinators play in our growing spaces.
June – Bringing It All Together
We’ll continue planting and look at creative ways to use your space, including hanging baskets. There’ll also be time to reflect on how far you’ve come and explore how to use your fresh produce in the kitchen.
July – Making the Most of Your Harvest
As crops begin to flourish, we’ll focus on preserving what you’ve grown. From blanching and freezing to a jam-making taste session, you’ll learn practical skills to enjoy your harvest long after summer.
August – Keeping Your Plot Thriving
We’ll cover how to stay on top of your growing space with weeding, pinching out and side-shooting, alongside harvesting and pickling. It’s about maintaining balance while enjoying the rewards of your hard work.
September – Preparing for Change
You’ll learn how to identify and manage common plant diseases and viruses, take part in a wildlife talk (including hedgehogs) and finish the season with comforting soup-making using your produce.
October – Closing Down for Winter
Finally, we’ll guide you through how to close down your allotment for winter, protecting the soil and preparing for the year ahead, ending the course feeling confident, capable and connected.
This course is about wellbeing, community and taking time to slow down. It’s a chance to learn practical life skills, spend time outdoors and share knowledge with others in a supportive, relaxed environment.
