It’s been really nice getting stuck into our growing course here at Brighter Futures and spending more time outdoors together at Walton Allotments.
The course is all about learning simple gardening skills, working together and enjoying a calm outdoor space. We’ve already been getting hands on and starting to see things take shape.
What we’ve been up to
We’ve stuck into the basics by:
– Preparing the ground and setting up the beds
– Planting potatoes
– Sowing seeds such as cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and corn
– Learning how to care for everything as it grows
It’s been a nice mix of learning new things, getting our hands dirty and working together.
A bit of nature along the way
We’ve also had a bit of a surprise along the way with wild ducks nesting on site. Not something we planned, but it’s been lovely to see and a nice reminder that nature is very much part of the space here.
While we’ve been picking up practical skills along the way, the course has really been about so much more than just gardening.

It’s given people the chance to:
– Get outdoors and spend time in nature
– Work alongside others and have a chat
– Build confidence by learning as they go
– Enjoy a bit of calm away from day-to-day life
It’s often the simple stuff like being outside together, that has the biggest impact.
