Why Being Outdoors Matters for Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Week in May was all about looking after our mental wellbeing and the small things that can help us feel better day to day.

That’s something that naturally comes through in what we do every week at Walton Allotments, here at Brighter Futures.

Being Outdoors and Active

Spending time outside can make a real difference to how people feel and we see that every week in our sessions.

Time outdoors can help reduce stress

Nature can improve mood and wellbeing

Being active can help focus and clarity

These are all things we see reflected in our sessions, whether it’s planting, preparing the ground or simply spending time in a calm outdoor space.

Learning New Skills in a Calm Space

Our growing sessions give people the chance to try something new at their own pace.

From sowing seeds to looking after plants as they grow, there is a real sense of progress and achievement.

This kind of hands on learning can help build confidence and create a sense of routine which many people find really beneficial for their wellbeing.

Connecting with Others

A big part of what we do is just getting people together. Working alongside each other, chatting and sharing the experience helps create a really supportive space.

It’s those connections that help people feel less isolated and make sessions more enjoyable overall.

Through time outdoors, learning new skills and connecting with others we aim to create a space where people can feel supported, active and more positive in themselves.
